The majority of Americans are familiar with the dangers of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation to your skin, (including sunburn and skin cancer) and the importance of applying sunblock and using other protective measures during outdoor activities. But did you know that UV and other radiation from the sun also pose a danger to your eyes?

If you are considering going outside without proper eye protection, think again. Extended exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays has been seen to be a cause of damage to the eye.

Risks of UV Eye Exposure

Excessive short term exposure to UV can lead to photokeratitis or a ''sunburn on the eye'', which results in pain, blurred vision or even temporary vision loss. Long-term ultraviolet exposure can lead to more threatening eye diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration, and others, all of which can be a threat to vision. Individuals that come into frequent contact with welding machines, tanning beds and lasers are also at heightened risk of exposure to UV radiation.

UV Eye Protection

To guard your eyes from dangerous UV rays, you should be careful to only purchase sunglasses that completely block all UV rays. Look for shades that specify they are ''UV 400'', which indicates that they block all light rays with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers (which includes both UVA and UVB rays, both known to enter the atmosphere).

You also want to choose sunglasses with full eye coverage. Sunglasses with side protection can block harmful ultraviolet light from entering from the sides and back of the frame.

You don't have to empty your pockets to have sufficient UV defense, but you should not make a purchase until you are certain the sunglasses offer complete solar protection. Many less expensive brands do offer proper defense from the threatening risks of exposure to sunlight. The great news is that in addition to guarding your eyes from the dangers of UV exposure, stylish shades are all the rage, so find something you love and have fun in the sun!
